Tutorial

We have permission from Freedom Scientific to distribute the Sound Forge tutorial prepared by Jonathan Mosen for sound forge 4.5. While some aspects of sound forge have changed since this tutorial was prepared, such as the menus reorganization that took place at sound forge 10, it remains mostly relevant today, and is still quite instructive. FS wants me to make sure you realize that they, and I, both realize that not every aspect of the material in the tutorial is strictly accurate as it applies to later Sounf Forge versions. Now, you know too. Fair enough?

Summary Sound Forge 10 versus Earlier Sound Forges

Click the link below to download a PDF file from Sony, explaining all the changes they have made. There has been lots of clever re-organizing done here, just to give you something else to learn, and to mess with your old Sound Forge paradigm. The Installer

If you got your Sound Forge mailed to you on a CD, you can explore the CD, and find the setup programs to launch them directly, using windows explorer.

If you downloaded the update from Sony, and unzip the contents into a folder, then run the AutoRun.exe fle, the scripts installer script listed below should help you get the individual installers running from the autoRun applet. The AutoRun installer program displays a window that contains no readable text. So far, we know of two hot locations that must be clicked in order to install sony sound forge, or the noise reduction pluggin.
You can install these simple scripts, or you can try the user-supplied tip below.

As an alternative, a subscriber provides another work-around, which does not require scripts. Read about it here in this: Installing Sound Forge 10 Tip

This script will let you start the installer. First of all, Download the scripts for the installer And place the contents of the .ZIP file in the user-specific settings area of jaws, the same folder that opens when you choose "explore my settings" from the jaws item in the windows start menu.
Now, start the installer program. You will see a window with a title bar, and nothing else.
Insert+h will list the available hot keys.
To install Sound forge, press control+shift+1
To install Noise Reduction 2.0, press control+shift+2.

Program Setup Adjustments

  1. Go to the View menu, toolBars, and make sure all toolBars are unchecked. Standard and Transport are checked by default.

Scripts for the Application

These will use your existing snow_forge60.jsb authorization.
If you have not already subscribed, and have not yet purchased an authorization, you can download a demo authorization below. The demo is fully functional, but requires a jaws restart every ten minutes in order to continue using the scripts.
Do not download this if you have already purchased an authorization.
Place this file in the user-specific settings area of jaws. Download Temporary Authorization File Here

To obtain The actual scripts, for both Sound forge, and for Audio Studio, , Download the installer below, and run it as usual. Download Sound forge and Audio Studio 10 Scripts Version 10.0.16 Install the scripts, and run sound forge. Insert+q should report Sound Forge scripts version 10.0.15 are running. If it says default scripts are loaded, then the installer failed, and you should contact the Snowman.

Latest release

Version 10.0.15 just improves handling of the tab key when switching channels. this more correctly handles files that contain more than 2 channels. This is also migrated to use the NSIS installer, to ease the installation process.

Version 10.0.14 includes improvements to the transport training exercise used to find the shuttle controls. If you are upgrading, it is very important, after installing the upgrade, to open a sound file, and perform the training exercise with alt+control+shift+t before proceeding. This should lead to less frequent need to retrain, and should work on a wider assortment of systems.

Version 10.0.13 adds one feature, which is a record status monitor. A soft, short beep will sound when recording actually begins. While recording is in progress, hold down the control key to check to make sure sound forge is still recording. A soft beep will play about once per second when the control key is down if recording is still running. A beep of a lower tone will play once if recording stops.
The scripts are monitoring changes in the time field in order to make this determination. The field updates about once per second, and sometimes even longer when first starting recording. Therefore, there is an inevitable delay of 1 to 2 seconds from the timerecording actually begins until you hear the tone.
To disable this feature, edit file forge100.ini, and change the line that says
RecordStatus=1
And change it to
RecordStatus=0

Version 10.0.10

Identical to 10.0.9, except for a minor problem corrected when operating sliders in the pitch shift dialog.

Following describes 10.0.9, and also applies to .10.

Support was added for the regions list, the CD Track List, and CD Information dialogs. All these dialogs have quirks that you need to become familiar with. so, be sure to consult the insert+h hot key help while focused in the dialog. Each of them can be found under the view menu, in Meta information. Basically, they are all table grids, that allow you to arrow to a cell, and press enter to edit it's contents, then enter again to approve.

Notes

This is a collection of notes made while working on the scripts.

Initial Setup

After installing Sound Forge for the first time, go to the view menu, toolBars, and make sure all toolBars are unchecked.

RegionsList

To activate the regions list, you no longer press alt+2. You must go to the view menu, up arrow, then right arrow, then enter.

This list, as well as the CD tracks list, and a couple other dialogs, is really organized like a spreadsheet, where you use up and down arrows to pick a region, and left and right arrows to choose which field of that region you want to hear, or modify. You would press enter on a selected field to edit it.
Note: This dialog is very non-standard under the hood. Some pretty complicated script logic, involving the scanning for special colors was required. Because color values sometimes differ on other operating systems, your results may vary. We know that the dialogs sometimes misbehave, but usually arrowing around a bit will fix it. Not much can be done about that. But, if jaws says, not found, all the time, we got a problem with your machine, and need to know about it.

Saving and Deleting Presets

Sony has very conveniently removed the buttons for saving and deleting presets from the tab order in the various effect dialogs. So, if you want to perform those actions, you can either use the jaws cursor to locate the buttons, or you can press insert+f8 to bring up a list of toolBar buttons. Select the one you want, and press enter. If you want to use the jaws cursor, the two buttons are on the same line as the combo box that lists presets, just to the right of the preset name.

JAWS Becomes Very Unresponsive

When you have a dialog open, such as one of the effects, There are various ways in which you can accidentally leave that dialog, while it still remains open. One of them is if you press insert+f8 to bring up the toolBar, and then press escape without activating a toolbar button. Sound Forge insists on grabbing the escape key as well, which can focus you back in the main window, though your effect dialog is actually still open. The best clue that this has happened, is that jaws becomes very unresponsive. If you just tap the PC cursor key, the big plus key on the numPad, there is usually a noticeable delay before jaws says, PC.
If this happens, until we an figure out a way of preventing it altogether, you can use a temporary key stroke, control+shift+slash, which will focus you back in the orphaned window.

Mastering Effects Bundle

This very popular set of utilities is usable only if you like the presets. The individual parameters that make up a preset can not presently be adjusted. And, it is not likely that they will be any time soon. The sliders that let you adjust these parameters are completely invisible to jaws. It is possible that an interested party could sit down, with HotSpotClicker in one hand, and a knowledgeable sighted person in the other, and get some of these dialogs to be manageable. But, I'm probably not going to be the one to do that. User community, step up to the plate if you want that one. I'll be happy to try to make them more stable, more portable, and to distribute the results.
